Learn Nepali from Hindi
(हिंदी से नेपाली)
If you know Hindi, you are already 70% there. Don't waste time on a generic course. Use Kapi's "Bridge Method" to master the differences.
Why it's easier for you:
- ✅ Same Script: You can already read Devanagari.
- ✅ Similar Vocabulary: 60% of words are shared (e.g., "Sarkar", "Duniya").
- ✅ Same Grammar: Both uses SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) structure.
What You Need to Unlearn
The biggest mistake Hindi speakers make is assuming everything is the same. Kapi highlights the specific "False Friends" and grammatical shifts.
⚠️ Top 10 "False Friends" (Confusing Words)
These words exist in Hindi but mean something totally different (or wrong) in Nepali.
| Hindi Concept | ❌ Don't Say (Hindi) | ✅ Say (Nepali) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boy | Ladka | Keto (केटो) | "Ladka" is not used. |
| Girl | Ladki | Keti (केटी) | Essential basic vocabulary. |
| World | Duniya | Sansar (संसार) | "Duniya" is rarely used in standard Nepali. |
| Government | Sarkar | Sarkar (But pronounced "Sar-kaar") | Same word, but accent is on the first syllable in Nepali. |
| Question | Sawal | Prashna (प्रश्न) | Formal Sanskrit roots are common. |
| Time | Waqt | Samaya (समय) | Urdu loanwords like Waqt are not used. |
The "Le" vs "Ne" Confusion
In Hindi, you use "Ne" (ने) for transitive verbs in the past tense (e.g., Ram ne khana khaya).
In Nepali, the equivalent is "Le" (ले). But it is used slightly differently.
- Hindi: Ram ne kaha (राम ने कहा)
- Nepali: Ram le bhanyo (राम ले भन्यो)
⚠️ Major Pitfall: Never use "Ne" in Nepali. "Ne" in Nepali is a particle for "tag questions" (like "haina?"), not a subject marker.
Kapi's Special Mode for Hindi Speakers
When you select "I know Hindi" in the Kapi app, we adjust the difficulty curve:
- Skip the Alphabet: We know you can read 'क'. We jump straight to pronunciation differences.
- Focus on 'Le' (ले): The subject marker is used differently in Nepali than Hindi's 'Ne' (ने).
- High-Frequency Vocabulary: We prioritize words that are completely different (e.g., 'Keto' vs 'Ladka').
